Many Tasmanians are struggling to pay their rent. We need to keep the ban on rent rises and evictions during this public health crisis.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused massive disruption to the lives of Tasmanians.

People have lost their jobs and are struggling to pay their bills.

Legislative amendments, successfully moved by the Tasmanian Greens last year, helped ensure no one would face eviction or rent rises during the pandemic emergency.

It was a huge win, but the Liberals plan to end these protections within days.

Many social sector and community organisations, along with the Greens, have been calling for the extension of these protections for weeks, but so far the Liberals haven’t listened. That’s why we need your help.

Tasmania’s rents are already among the most unaffordable in the country. If the tenancy protections aren’t extended, more Tasmanians will be pushed towards extreme financial hardship and homelessness.

NSW, Victoria, WA and the ACT have extended their protections because their governments understand the potential human cost of rent hikes and evictions during a crisis.

Tasmania needs to do the same.
